The US CPSC officially approved magnet safety regulations effective October 21

On September 21, 2022, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the final rule for the Magnet Safety Regulation (16 CFR 1262), which took effect on October 21, 2022 and applies to all magnet products manufactured after that date. Compared to the January proposal, the effective regulation also adds the magnetic flux coefficient to be determined using the method described in ASTM F963.

Scope of application:
Produced or imported in the United States to the United States in the design, sale or expectations for entertainment, jewelry, jewelry (including children), exercise, stress, or the combination of these purposes, and contains one or more loose or detachable magnets, but not only for education, research, and/or professional purpose to commercial or industrial sales or distribution of products.

This regulation exempts toy products subject to ASTM F963.

Requirements:
Magnets or products containing magnets that can fit fully into a small component test cylinder as required by 16 CFR 1501.4 must have a magnetic flux coefficient of less than 50 kG2/mm2 as described in ASTM F963.

Impact of regulations on the market
16 The requirements of CFR 1112 relating to third-party conformity assessment agencies are therefore amended by the Regulation to add the magnet regulation in effect to the list of children's product safety regulations, creating the corresponding magnet Safety regulation 16 CFR 1262, which complements the regulatory requirements for magnets or products containing magnets other than toys in the United States market.
As of October 21, 2022, non-toy magnets or magnetic-containing products exported to the United States will be required to comply with the requirements of this new regulation, and the test results of the relevant regulations will be reflected in the CPC or GCC certificate. Buckball products consisting of numerous small spherical magnets need to pay special attention to whether the size of a single magnet bead or magnetic flux of the product meets the requirements of the new regulations.
